As 2024 roars into life, many of us may be looking to make healthy changes.
Whether adding more movement to our week or more vegetables to our plate, getting behaviour changes to stick can be a real challenge – New Year’s Resolutions are notoriously difficult to maintain.
A study from 1989 found that 77% managed to keep their resolutions for the first week – impressive. But this success slowly descended into disappointment. Only 19% managed to keep them for 2 years.
That’s around 1 in 5 people maintaining a change, which isn’t terrible, but what if there was a science-backed technique we could use to improve our chances?
Some people swear by something called WOOP. Here, I’ll explain what it is and cover some of the research supporting it. I’ll also inject a dose of healthy scepticism and offer some other options.
